** In order to be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the title of Transportation Specialist, or must have passed and be reachable on the Open Competitive Exam # 3027 for Transportation Specialist ,or be eligible under the 55a program. **
Traffic Control & Engineering is responsible for administration, engineering and operations related to the installation, manufacturing, maintenance and removal of signs, flexible bollards, moveable barriers, in-house traffic sign production and other traffic control devices. The office draws on the expertise and talents of engineers, sign designers, planners, inspectors, IT experts, analysts and others to help the agency achieve Vision Zero and other city goals.
Traffic Control & Engineering is seeking a dedicated and driven Transportation Specialist to join our Manhattan Borough Engineering office. The selected candidate will undertake a range of professional transportation and traffic-related projects, studies, and investigations. Responsibilities include documenting existing conditions and issues, proposing improvements, conducting field investigations, and potential staff supervision. Active participation in data collection, conducting surveys, and evaluating traffic conditions. Proficient computer skills are required as the job involves data entry and the use of city-specific transportation software such as the Sign Information Management System (SIMS). Tasks also include preparing forms, reports, logs, and correspondence. Ideal candidates will be meticulous, accurate, effective team players, and must maintain a positive attitude coupled with outstanding communication skills. Additionally, the candidate will review and approve work orders, ensuring all operations comply with established guidelines and specifications, and may suggest enhancements to improve efficiency. Strict adherence to all agency safety protocols to maintain a safe work environment, including the correct usage of safety equipment and attire at work sites is required. The candidate should embrace a collaborative and inclusive work approach, be committed to ongoing professional growth, and effectively engage with all relevant stakeholders. Preferred Skills
1. Candidates with a valid New York State motor vehicle driver’s license will be given preference.

This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37.

Qualifications
1. A master’s degree in transportation engineering, mathematics, urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, or related physical and social science fields; or
2. A baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college and one year of full-time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area-wide traffic programs; or
3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or
4. An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or
5. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above.
SPECIAL NOTE:
In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements above:
To be assigned to Assignment Level II, the candidate must have an additional year of experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" listed under "2" above.
To be assigned to Assignment Level III, the candidate must have an additional two years of experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" listed under "2" above.
