About the Position
We’re looking to hire smart generalists to join Jane Street’s Treasury team. Our group has a mix of qualitative and quantitative work that touches almost all parts of the firm and is a great place for intellectually curious people who are interested in working at the intersection of markets, technology, and business strategy.
Jane Street is one of the world’s biggest trading firms; we help investors buy and sell securities and ensure that markets run efficiently around the globe. The Treasury team helps to manage the billions of dollars the firm borrows to support this trading. We see our job as trying to solve the fascinating and challenging optimization problem of doing this in the best way.
Here are some of the things you may do:
- Collaborate closely with trading desks to understand their challenges and find solutions to facilitate their trading, in both calm and volatile times
- Build frameworks to weigh competing tradeoffs (e.g., risk, costs, complexity, and people’s time) and guide our strategy
- Negotiate with our funding counterparties, like large banks
- Figure out when and how to use convex optimization, statistics, and other mathematical techniques to solve problems, and when to use simpler methods like Fermi estimates or basic arithmetic
- Analyze and visualize complex data using tools like Python and SQL
- Design robust and elegant systems alongside our team of software engineers
Our team thrives by bringing together smart, ambitious people to collaborate and debate in a welcoming, empathetic, and respectful environment. We have a culture that encourages everyone to work hard but also have a healthy balance with the rest of their lives outside of work.
About You
We’re open to people from a range of backgrounds and experience levels – whether you were doing product or strategy at a startup, data science or engineering at a big tech firm, alpha generation or risk at a hedge fund, or something else. Given the nature of our work, we’ll expect candidates to have strong academic or professional backgrounds in a highly mathematical field. We’re focused on finding candidates with the qualities below:
- Exceptional analytical skills, including the ability to learn quickly and the aptitude to think algorithmically and mathematically. We’re looking for deep and incisive thinkers who can handle complex, diverse forms of information, find solutions to new problems, and make good risk and financial decisions. We don’t require any specific technical experience, but because our work ties closely to financial markets, probability, data, and computer systems, we’ll rely on your mathematical acumen to understand these and related areas.
- The ability to get things done, manage projects, and stay organized. We want you to take ownership and leadership of projects and systems — with plenty of mentorship and support along the way. We’re looking for people who can execute effectively, are appropriately pragmatic, and can exercise the right level of attention to detail.
- Willingness to roll up your sleeves and work in a fast-paced environment. While much of our work is long-term and project-based, and we prioritize automation and good systems, we also support the firm’s live trading. You should be happy to jump in and work closely with the rest of the team as we do whatever is needed to create value.
- Passion and curiosity about the work we do. We are looking for colleagues who are interested in and excited by the work we do, and eager to think about financial and technical problems. If you enjoy Matt Levine’s columns, that’s a great sign.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. You should be able to distill complex concepts into clear, concise messages for a range of audiences.
- Collaborative, kind, and humble attitude. We challenge each other’s ideas in a collegial way and think it’s important to acknowledge the limits of our own knowledge.
