Job Overview: The Fuel Data Analyst Intern (FDS Analyst Intern) will support the Fuel Management System Program at Norfolk Southern (NS), a transformational initiative to optimize the entire fuel lifecycle process, from purchase and receipt to delivery and fuel burn analysis in locomotives. This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic, data-driven environment while working on projects that streamline and enhance the efficiency of critical fuel management processes. You will be a key player in documenting and analyzing processes, testing new tools, and gaining valuable insight into the fuel efficiency of NS’s fleet. This position will allow you to work closely with engineers, analysts, and software developers to support the redesign of tools and systems that enhance the fuel lifecycle management. Key Responsibilities: Process Documentation & Analysis: Assist in documenting the current fuel lifecycle processes, including purchasing, receipt, delivery, and fuel efficiency tracking. Learn to identify process inefficiencies and contribute ideas for improvements. Data Analysis & Reporting: Support the analysis of fuel burn and consumption data across the fleet. Assist in creating reports and dashboards using tools such as Excel, PowerBI, and SAS, to provide insights for operational improvements. Software Testing: Assist in User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for new software tools. Help validate that the tools work as expected and meet the needs of the fuel management system. Collaboration: Work closely with team members across departments, including mechanical engineers, IT specialists, and data analysts, to understand how different systems and processes interact. Fuel Efficiency Monitoring: Support the tracking and reporting of fuel consumption and efficiency across locomotives. Assist with generating reports that inform decision-making for fuel optimization. Process Improvement Support: Assist in gathering requirements and contributing to the design of new processes that improve the fuel lifecycle. Participate in the redesign and documentation of new workflows and systems. Qualifications: Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Analytics, or a related technical field. Experience & Skills: Mechanical Infrastructure Understanding: Some familiarity with mechanical systems and infrastructure or a strong willingness to learn. Data Analysis & Technical Skills: Basic proficiency in Excel and experience with PowerBI or other data visualization tools is preferred. Familiarity with SAS or similar analytical platforms is a plus. Software & Tools: Interest or experience with tools such as PowerPoint, Power Apps, and Power BI is beneficial. Process Design & Documentation: Strong interest in process analysis, documentation, and process improvement. A keen eye for detail and the ability to organize information clearly. Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, with strong communication skills to collaborate with engineers, analysts, and IT professionals. Learning Agility: Ability to quickly learn new software, systems, and processes, and apply that knowledge effectively.
