Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail- oriented Biologist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) located at Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, MT.
Technical Requirements:
- Perform host and pathogen DNA/RNA purification and quantitation, QC, real-time PCR, sequencing, ELISAs, qRT-PCR, virus quantification, growth curve analyses, and sequencing.
- Perform plasmid design/preparation, cellular transfections/transductions and corresponding quantification; cell culture; and generation of single cell suspensions from various tissues.
- Perform high throughput biological sample screening for pathogens.
- Perform BSL-3 work on viruses requiring high containment.
- Utilize principles of molecular biology, genetics, systems biology, and immunology. Perform quality control of the laboratory.
- Assist with maintaining and organizing inventory of samples and metadata, and with managing inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents.
- Perform cell culture and growth of pathogenic micro-organisms in cell culture.
- Potentially perform and conduct international field work in Africa.
- Handle animals and perform animal experiments, following all safety policies.
- Maintain detailed records of experiments and their results and prepare the information resulting from these experiments for sharing results and reports laboratory-wide, NIH-wide, and for publication.
- Responsible for laboratory upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment. Maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials, etc. required to handle biological materials, carcinogens, recombinant protein materials, acids, and biological wastes, etc.
- Assist with maintaining work bench and equipment related to the project. Catalog and label laboratory samples.
- Operate and communicate effectively in a group, team-oriented working environment. Work with and support others in a collegial, open, respectful, and interactive working manner.
- Assist in the analysis and interpretation of data and prepare summaries of laboratory findings to be used in reports and papers for publication in scientific journals. Assist in the preparation of manuscripts, abstracts, and/or posters.
- Work collaboratively with others in the lab to generate sequencing-based data for publications.
- Assist with the maintenance of sequencers and liaise with vendors as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Life Sciences or related discipline.
- Two (2) years of experience in biology or a related field.
- Demonstrates experience working in a laboratory environment. Demonstrates knowledge of maintaining accurate and detailed records.
- Demonstrates knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
- Must be a team player who can effectively work with members from cross-functional departments.
- Expected to work independently or in collaboration with others.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with computer software including word processing, data evaluation, and project timeline management.
