The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) (https://www.czbiohub.org/sf/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.
Our Vision
- We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
- We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
- The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond
Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.
The Opportunity
Come join an interdisciplinary team of biologists, technologists, data scientists and engineers!
The Leonetti group at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub (https://www.czbiohub.org/leonetti) strives to map how the human cell is built by combining CRISPR, fluorescence microscopy, mass spec proteomics, robotics, software engineering and data science. We build large datasets and use them to develop new algorithms and analyses. Our flagship OpenCell project provides a large reference of protein localization and interactions that can be mined and re-used by the entire community for discovery (https://opencell.czbiohub.org/). Our science is fully open-source and published in journals like Science and Nature Methods (https://bit.ly/3T5Fbmf; https://go.nature.com/3rXOSae)
In new projects, we aim to understand how the entire proteome gets rewired when disease strikes (ex: disease-causing mutations, viral infection; see example in this recent pre-print http://bit.ly/3HQ5ybL). We are seeking a Scientist - Quantitative Cell Biology & Proteomics to spearhead our next efforts to apply proteomic methods, analyze data and extract quantitative insights about cellular responses. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the leading edge of human cell biology, supported by experts in a highly collaborative, open and well-funded scientific environment. We bring together cell biologists, disease experts, technology developers, data scientists and machine learning experts around team-science projects.
What You’ll Do
- Quantify cellular responses occurring during disease (infection, neurodegeneration) and identify new cellular mechanisms
- Design proteomics assays for profiling pan-cellular remodeling upon perturbation;
- Develop new analytical strategies
- Partner with data scientists and software engineers to build pipelines for quantitative data analysis and web portals to share our insights
- Be part of a larger team of cell biology and disease experts, microscopists and technology developers
- Explain technical concepts to a multi-disciplinary team of biologists, bioengineers, and data scientists at the Biohub
- Author publications & mentor junior colleagues
What You’ll Bring
Essential –
- PhD in Cell Biology, Systems Biology, Biophysics, or a related discipline
- At least 4 years of expertise with cell biology and tissue culture models
- At least 2 years of expertise in mass spectrometry-based proteomics
- At least 2 years of experience in quantitative data analysis (Python, R, etc…)
- Technical understanding of mass spectrometry instruments
- Passion for research and understanding how cells work
- Enthusiasm for team science and open science
- Must be team-oriented, and have excellent written and oral communication skills
Nice to have -
- Experience with network analysis
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Networkrequires all employees, contractors, and interns, regardless of work location or type of role, to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, including a booster vaccine dose, if eligible, by their start date. Those who are unable to get vaccinated or obtain a booster dose because of a disability, or who choose not to be vaccinated due to a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance must have an approved exception prior to their start date.
Compensation
- Scientist I = $100,000 - $137,500
- Scientist II = $112,000 - $154,000
New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. To determine starting pay, we consider multiple job-related factors including a candidate’s skills, education and experience, market demand, business needs, and internal parity. We may also adjust this range in the future based on market data. Your recruiter can share more about the specific pay range during the hiring process.
