About Fern
APIs underpin the internet but are still painful to work with. They are often untyped, unstandardized, and out-of-sync across multiple sources of truth.
Fern enables businesses to offer “Stripe-level” SDKs (client libraries) and Docs for their REST API. Inspired by internal tooling we saw at AWS and Palantir, we’re building Fern to let every engineering team offer easy-to-use and well-documented APIs.
Founded in 2022, we’re less than 10 people, building open source, and backed by YCombinator. We work together in our office in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. Our customers include Cohere, ElevenLabs, Webflow, and Merge.dev.
About the role
Skills: FigmaThis role is in person at our office in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.
We are a small, close-knit group of generalists who enjoy solving problems and get energy from working closely with our customers. We're looking for a talented Product Designer (you!) to bring expertise in Figma and prototyping tools to our team.
Core Responsibilities
- Interaction and visual design. You'll be involved at every stage of design work. You'll help define early product concepts, flesh out the high-level workflow and micro-interactions of a feature, and execute a crisp and effective visual design.
- Prototyping. You will prototype both to communicate your designs and validate your decisions. You’ll go out and get feedback directly from our users over Slack and Zoom.
- Empathy with the developer persona. Our users typically have the title software engineer and have a high capacity for complexity. As such, your ability to understand and reason about technical concepts is key, as you will be designing data-dense, operational interfaces. The ideal candidate is able to distill complex concepts into familiar, easy-to-use workflows while retaining the flexibility of an enterprise platform.
- Product ownership. You will be responsible for the end-to-end user experience. We expect strong opinions about product direction. Utilize your design skills to help craft our roadmap.
- Awareness of how software interfaces are built. Familiarity with modern web technologies (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript) is appreciated. You don't need to be an expert—just fluent enough to collaborate with engineers and know what's possible with frontend technologies.
What you’ll bring
- 3+ years of professional product design experience
- Significant experience working with Figma and a prototyping tool
- (Nice to have) You've worked in a high-growth SaaS company
- (Nice to have) Experience as the only designer on a small team
We’re looking for a 20-hour-per-week commitment with the opportunity for contract-to-hire.
