Job Function. As a Director of Communications, you’ll have diverse strategic communications experience, including brand management, messaging, digital engagement, internal communications, writing, strategic partnerships, executive communications, thought leadership, issues management, and crisis communications. You will have demonstrated skills and comfort in cultivating relationships with top-tier national communications strategists and influencers that lead to successfully positioning the organization through paid, earned, and owned media. You will also represent the organization at press/media functions and contribute to advancing the overall mission of the organization in collaboration with the Sachamama family.
Sachamama is based in Florida. This job is full-time, and hybrid requiring some in-person engagement during campaigns and events, as well as domestic travel. The Communications Director will report to the Executive Director and work closely with everyone: staff, partners, and volunteers.
Key Responsibilities.
Strategic communications and messaging
- Develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy focused on raising awareness of climate change impacts on Latino communities.
- Lead campaigns and messaging that highlight the intersection of climate change, public health, economic opportunity, and social justice.
- Ensure consistent, compelling, and culturally relevant messaging across all platforms and communications channels
Media & Public Relations
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with local, national, and international media outlets to secure coverage for the organization’s climate work
- Serve as the primary media spokesperson, including handling press inquiries, interviews, and public statements
- Prepare and distribute press releases, op-eds, fact sheets, and other media materials in both English and Spanish
- Coordinate and facilitate public events, town halls, webinars, and community meetings that educate, engage, and mobilize audiences around climate issues
Digital and Social Media Strategy
- Lead the development and execution of a robust digital and social media strategy to increase the organization’s online presence and engagement
- Manage social media channels to amplify messages on climate issues, share resources, and activate community involvement
- Oversee the creation of bilingual multimedia content, including videos, infographics, and digital campaigns that resonate with diverse Latino audiences
Collaborate and coordinate with other Sachamama components
- Provide communications guidance and support to program teams and staff members, ensuring consistent internal messaging with organizational priorities
- Develop communications materials (e.g., donor newsletters, annual reports, appeals) to support fundraising efforts and attract new donors
- Support advocacy efforts through the creation of compelling communications that mobilize stakeholders to take action on climate policy, environmental justice, and equity issues impacting local communities
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
- Track and analyze the effectiveness of communications campaigns and strategies, providing regular reports and recommendations for improvement
- Monitor media coverage and public sentiment around climate change and environmental justice issues as they relate to Latino communities.
Experience.
- At least 5 years’ of experience in communications, public relations, or media outreach, with at least 2 years of experience in a leadership role
- Strong understanding of climate change and environmental justice issues
- Proven track record of successful media campaigns and digital content creation
- Experience working with diverse, multicultural audiences, particularly Latino communities in the U.S.
- Familiarity with nonprofit sector dynamics and advocacy efforts is a plus
Skills and Competencies.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish), with advanced proficiency in both written and spoken communication
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to craft messages for diverse audiences
- Strong knowledge of social media platforms and digital marketing tools, including content creation, community management, and measurements
- Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with media, community leaders, donors, and stakeholders
