Data Reporting Intern, Summer 2025 The San Francisco Chronicle is looking for a summer intern to join our Data team, which develops on quick-turn, graphics-focused stories, interactive projects and data-driven deep dives. This intern will receive training and mentoring, but will also hit the ground running, covering a variety of stories from the office and in the field. There will be opportunities to pursue projects aimed at engaging our audience and to work closely with reporting teams throughout the newsroom. Deadline to apply: December 1, 2024. The successful candidate will work quickly but responsibly on data stories that help readers understand and explore their communities through unique reporting, data analysis and interactive graphics creation. This paid 12-week internship typically lasts from June to August. Hourly rate, $18.67; rate as of 11/1/2024 is dependent upon the new SF Minimum wage). What the data reporter will do: Report and write graphics- and data-driven articles for our digital and print editions. Conceive story ideas and work with editors and developers to enhance our storytelling. Collaborate with newsroom reporters to produce unique, high-impact journalism. Create assets to help promote and distribute the team’s work. What it will take to be successful: Strong news judgment, creativity and meticulousness. A dedication to organization and documentation. Desire and ability to learn on the job. Ability to report stories and write and build quickly while keeping the strictest commitment to fairness and accuracy. Ability to work with multiple, large datasets, preferably using Python, R or similar coding languages. Knowledge of current multimedia storytelling and desire to experiment with new ways of engaging readers. Ability to collaborate with all newsroom teams and work in a fast-changing news environment. Plus: Web development or data visualization experience. Plus: Mapping or GIS skills. Requirements: This position will be full time, based in the Bay Area for summer 2024. Weekend, evening and holiday work may be required as news warrants.
