The ESG Investment Management (ESG IM) team is a part of the Portfolio Strategy & Risk Group (PSRG) which provides guidance on Temasek’s strategic direction and portfolio objectives. ESG IM partners closely with teams across the Investment Group (IG), the Sustainability Group as well as the broader institution to advance ESG as a core engine across Temasek’s global investments and to drive sustainable outcomes that go hand in hand with financial returns. In addition to deepening and expanding ESG integration to both manage risks and drive value creation across the portfolio, the ESG IM team supports portfolio transition to meet Temasek’s climate goals and to expand sustainability investments.
Role Summary
The ESG Investment Management team is looking to bring on board an experienced US-based ESG professional to expand our team’s global presence and to support investment teams in the Americas as well as Europe. Being part of a global team, the candidate will work closely with the MD of ESG IM, who is based in New York, the Singapore based ESG IM colleagues as well as relevant investment teams in the Americas and Europe.
The role will focus on ESG integration, covering ESG due diligence for new investments and ESG engagement and value creation efforts for existing portfolio companies. The role is a critical contributor to the successful execution of the priorities under our strategic ESG plans, including climate transition, and the advancement of newer topics such as nature and social.
As part of a global team with a continuously evolving agenda, the role will offer the opportunity to take on a leading role in strategic projects as we continuously advance our ESG approach and frameworks as well as develop our institutional understanding around critical ESG themes.
Responsibilities:
- Market coverage for ESG Integration: lead ESG integration activities and shape ESG priorities for the Americas and Europe markets
- Pre-investment diligence: collaborate with investment teams and provide guidance on ESG related aspects in the evaluation of direct and fund investment opportunities in the pre-investment stage
- Post-investment portfolio: drive post-investment ESG monitoring and engagement with portfolio companies as part of a broader value creation agenda
- Post-investment strategy: serve as the team’s expert on post-investment engagement from both a risk mitigation and value creation perspective. Aggregate knowledge, continuously strengthen and evolve our post-investment approach and drive internal alignment around objectives, methodologies and outcomes
- Thematic research: lead the research and delivery of thematic reports and tools on cross-cutting ESG issues and megatrends impacting investment decisions and portfolio management
- Capabilities: manage and expand our knowledge network of ESG consultants, data vendors and sustainability subject matter experts
- Partner with and support MD of ESG IM in advancing and executing on broader strategic priorities
- Prepare and deliver internal and external updates related to institutional ESG activities and broader trends
- Contribute to broader institutional projects associated with the execution of institutional climate goals and climate integration
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Business Management, Finance, Accounting, Sustainability, Environmental Management or related areas is preferred
- At least eight years of work experience, majority of which is in ESG integration, due diligence, portfolio engagement or investment stewardship, preferably in private equity, investment management or consulting
- Robust understanding of climate risks and opportunities as they apply and shape long-term investing and corporate strategies
- Knowledge / expertise in other critical sustainability themes (e.g. nature and social issues (e.g., human rights, DEI) in the context of investments is a plus
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess materially relevant issues and E&S impacts in the evaluation of new investment opportunities
- Ability to produce high quality outputs in a timely manner leveraging on strong business acumen and strategic thinking
- Strong communication, writing and presentation skills
- Strong intercultural awareness, team orientation, adaptability, and ability to work across geographies and teams – including work hours that can extend across global time zones
- Strong work ethic, ability to demonstrate initiative, ownership, and manage multiple priorities
- Flexible, adaptable, agile with ability to multi-task
Salary range – Base salary of US$130K – US$200K per annum (compensation structure includes various additional incentives payable in April, August and October annually)
