Department Summary The Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact is an ambitious initiative designed to fast-track scientific discoveries into innovations that improve the quality of life for people in Oregon, the nation, and the world. The campus creates the intellectual infrastructure to establish Oregon as a center for both research and development, making Oregon a place where companies can start up and grow. The Knight Campus is reshaping the higher education landscape in Oregon by training the next generations of scientists, forging tighter ties with industry and entrepreneurs, and creating new educational opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students. The Knight Campus supports a dynamic externally sponsored research portfolio, a diverse set of graduate academic programming, innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives, and an active external affairs program.The Knight Campus Graduate Internship Program (KCGIP) at the Knight Campus trains students in the real-world knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the industrial and research laboratory - and at the interview table. We believe an advanced degree should help students land a job and prepare them for a successful career. The program currently has multiple tracks including Bioinformatics and Genomics, Semiconductors, Optical Materials & Devices, Polymer Science, and Molecular Sensors and Biotechnology. The program is also growing and able to launch new tracks to align with industry needs. The KCGIP currently enrolls 80-90 graduate students annually and is expected to have enrollment growth over the next 2-5 years. Position Summary A lecturer in the Knight Campus Internship program will teach summer and academic term courses with the goal of preparing students for Master's level positions in academic, industry, and government labs. Lecturers teach students topics that span bioinformatics and genomics, materials science, chemistry, biochemistry, and/or chemical engineering in an experiential format. They will also assist the director in aspects of student success including participation in the admissions committee, student professional and technical mentoring, engagement with the alumni network, and engagement with external partners for internship check-ins and evaluations. A small amount of research may also be conducted to stay up to date in the field, engage with external partner scientists, and inform the program curriculum. Minimum Requirements • PhD. In exceptional circumstances, a bachelor's degree with extensive relevant experience will be considered. • Three years of experience in research/innovation capacity.• Experience teaching and developing curriculum at the graduate level. Professional Competencies • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.• Ability to distill and communicate information to audiences with varying degrees of subject matter knowledge (beginners to experts).• Ability to deliver inclusive, engaged, and research-led teaching at the graduate level.• Strong work ethic and self-motivated approach toward achieving results as part of a team.• Ability to represent the program in a professional manner and follow all university policies and procedures.• Ability to identify and implement best practices for creating an inclusive community for student retention and success.• Organizational, time management, multi-tasking, and planning capabilities.• Strong attention to detail. Preferred Qualifications • Research experience in bioinformatics and genomics field.• Demonstrated ability to work in an HPC environment.• Experience with using version control for collaboration (Git/GitHub).• Experience in scRNA-seq analysis or other ‘omics analysis (proteomics, metabolomics, spatial omics, etc.).• Applied machine learning experience.• Communication of work in white papers, peer-reviewed publications, and/or conferences, and internal and external talks.• Demonstrated ability to code in Python, bash, and/or R.• Experience in the development of bioinformatics analysis pipelines dealing with sequencing data types and their specific file formats.
