Twist IBT Fellowship Program
At Twist Bioscience, we serve customers who are improving the world in fields such as medicine, agriculture, industrial chemicals, and data storage. Using our synthetic DNA tools, our customers are developing ways to better their lives and improve the planet’s sustainability.
The Twist IBT Fellowship is a focused 6-9 month internship intended for recent graduates from top-tier undergraduate colleges and universities who want to work in a dynamic biotechnology environment after graduation and before graduate school. The program provides practical experience and insight into how innovative academic and industrial research is translated into a great commercial product.
The Twist IBT Fellow will work on a focused technical project that they can call their own, ranging from possible topics in synthetic biology, information technology, optimization algorithms, statistical learning (AI) software, and stepwise biotechnology manufacturing execution systems. The projects you work on will be fun and interesting and will give you substantial exposure to the world of biotechnology. You will work closely with senior staff as you develop your technical problem solving skills. The projects you work on will have an impact, and will give you substantial exposure to the biotechnology environment before you embark on your graduate studies.
As an intern, you will be entrusted with tasks that require specific skills and are crucial to the project. These tasks are not just for learning; they are important as they will aid in completing the project.
Individual Research
- Fellows will be assigned a project that can be completed during the fellowship.
- Fellows will be assigned a mentor who will work with them and guide their work.
- Fellows will participate in daily on-site standup meetings and weekly group meetings.
- Fellows will perform data analysis and interpretation to support their project.
- Fellows will write a final report and give a 40 minute presentation on their work.
IBT Service Work
Additionally, fellows will assist in ongoing projects in the following ways (among others):
- Research: Conducting research on new technologies or industry trends.
- Testing: Assisting with software testing and quality assurance.
- Documentation: Creating and maintaining technical documentation.
- Project support: Providing general support to IT projects
What You’ll Bring to the Team
- A strong interest in biology and computer science.
- Demonstrated (projects or classes) skills to perform statistical analysis.
- Demonstrated (projects or classes) skills to write original software.
- Great communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- A desire to be in the office every day working with the team at Twist.
Preferred Qualifications
- Recent graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in any of the computer science, physical science, bioengineering or other engineering disciplines.
- Students who are proficient at any of the major programming languages (preferably TypeScript/JavaScript, and/or Java, and/or Python) and have some degree of software development experience (Git, GitHub, Jira). Applicants should also understand or have some familiarity with object oriented programming, algorithms, data structures, object and relational databases, and Model-View-Controller style web based development.
- If accepted to the program, Fellows must commit to at least 6 months of continuous residence full time in-house at Twist’s facilities in South San Francisco.
The base cash compensation for this California-based role is below. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for bonus, equity, and a generous benefits package. Final compensation amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate skill, experience, expertise, and location and may vary from the amount listed above. Compensation may be different in other locations.
