Who We Are:
Calico (Calico Life Sciences LLC) is an Alphabet-founded research and development company whose mission is to harness advanced technologies and model systems to increase our understanding of the biology that controls human aging. Calico will use that knowledge to devise interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives. Calico’s highly innovative technology labs, its commitment to curiosity-driven discovery science, and, with academic and industry partners, its vibrant drug-development pipeline, together create an inspiring and exciting place to catalyze and enable medical breakthroughs.
Position Description:
Calico is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join our Discovery Data Science team which harnesses high-dimensional data and systems biology to elucidate the mechanisms underpinning aging and disease with an eye towards target discovery. We actively collaborate with cross-functional teams across the company guiding the generation of exceptional datasets, supporting interpretation, and generating hypotheses which can be tested by our colleagues using either high-throughput or bespoke experiments.
As part of our effort to understand the biology of human aging and age-related diseases, we are combining genetic and pharmacological perturbations with high-dimensional readouts such as bulk and single cell sequencing, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and microscopy. Information from these experimental platforms has the potential to bridge the gap between real world data from large human cohorts such as the UK Biobank and an actionable understanding of the biological underpinnings of human aging and age-related diseases. However, reconciling these perturbations and diverse read-outs into testable biological hypotheses is a challenging data science problem requiring diverse skill sets, cross-functional collaboration, and a strong grounding in biology.
Discovery Data Science bridges this gap by contributing to data-rich cross-group research programs. These programs often require us to solve novel analytical challenges and build connections between multiple internal and external data resources.
As a Senior Data Scientist, you will actively contribute to research projects leveraging high-dimensional multimodal data by developing scientific computing tools in the form of R and/or Python packages in close collaboration with our Software Engineering team.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with scientists throughout R&D to identify and address key biological questions via creative analysis of high-dimensional datasets and design of high impact experiments
- Plan and develop software which makes our scientific data and information accessible to computationally savvy researchers and improves its harmony through the usage of controlled vocabularies and ontologies
- Standardize common analyses (e.g., regression and GSEA) to make them robust to diverse use cases and develop advanced algorithms which address key problems in basic research
- Communicate clearly and effectively in verbal, visual, and written form to stakeholders with varying levels of technical knowledge
Position Requirements:
- Ph.D. / MS and four years of work experience in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics, Biological Sciences, Genomics, or equivalent preparation
- Fluency applying R (tidyverse) and/or Python (pandas, sklearn, jupyter) to diverse analytical problems and organizing code into packages
- Experience analyzing high-dimensional biological datasets such as bulk and/or single-cell RNAseq, metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, microscopy, and/or cell painting
- Experience conducting systems biological analyses that integrate ‘omics datasets, molecular pathways, and/or genetic data to generate specific testable hypotheses
- Fundamental understanding of statistics and biology
- Track record of effective interdisciplinary collaboration and a team-first mentality
- Must be willing to work onsite four days a week
The estimated base salary range for this role is $164,000 - $172,000. Actual pay will be based on a number of factors including experience and qualifications. This position is also eligible for two annual cash bonuses.
