About the role:
The Baltimore Banner is looking for a News Designer to join our Audience team, which includes photographers, social editors and digital editors.
The News Designer will work with editorial, digital, and audience staff to create compelling visuals, in multiple formats that enhance article experiences and tell stories across multiple platforms. We are seeking candidates with a creative design aesthetic, strong journalistic instincts and a diverse range of skills.
Responsibilities:
- Create unique visuals including photo collages, comics and other illustrations
- Work with the reporters and the data team to create infographics and data visualizations
- Art direct pieces under the supervision of the Visuals Director
- Help recruit and maintain a strong pool of local freelance talent
- Pitch ideas for visually driven stories
- Help with digital presentation and interactive elements
- Collaborate with reporters and editors on stories
Job Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in news design, illustration, and art direction.
- Proficiency in creating graphics, infographics, and data visualizations.
- Passion for storytelling and translating complex stories across multiple platforms.
- Fluency in Adobe design programs.
- Willingness to experiment with new techniques and styles.
- Familiarity with best practices for designing across multiple digital platforms.
- Strong teamwork skills and ability to collaborate effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
- Availability to work some nights and weekends as needed based on news requirements.
- Commitment to upholding journalist values and ethics.
