The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
As a Reliability Engineer dedicated to ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our tunnel boring machines (TBMs). You’ll engage in a collaborative, cross-disciplinary environment, overseeing TBM components from design through production, operation, and maintenance phases.
Utilizing data-driven insights, you’ll delve into the factors influencing TBM reliability, actively supporting quality enhancements within design, development, manufacturing, testing, and operational processes. Your role will involve meticulous problem-solving at both detailed technical levels and system-wide perspectives, effectively prioritizing issues to optimize TBM performance.
You thrive in hands-on settings, readily transitioning between office environments, factory floors, and laboratories to fulfill our mission of revolutionizing underground transportation. Collaborating closely with teams across The Boring Company, you’ll ensure the success of TBM projects, advancing our goals in tunneling innovation.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborating with various teams involved in the development and construction of TBMs, as well as tunnel infrastructure systems, to optimize processes and ensure efficient vehicle processing.
- Developing, implementing, and validating lean test and inspection processes for both new and existing TBM products and processes, maintaining objective criteria and consistently meeting quality goals.
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives on the shop floor, enhancing production efficiency, and advancing toward a lean, autonomous production system.
- Identifying high-risk processes and potential issues during TBM processing or refurbishment, proactively implementing improvements to ensure operational excellence.
- Investigating failures in production, testing, and operation, identifying and addressing root causes to minimize risk and enhance reliability.
- Maintaining a feedback loop to drive improvements in TBM design and operation, utilizing data to prioritize and address high-impact issues.
- Participating in preliminary and critical design reviews, collaborating with design reliability teams to ensure quality, manufacturability, risk mitigation, and appropriate testing and inspection methods are considered.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or STEM discipline (e.g. physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics)
- 1-3 years in a manufacturing, quality and/or design engineering role
- Experience in a manufacturing environment with knowledge of processes, controls, and inspection methods
- Dedicated to adopting a lean approach to quality without compromising safety or reliability
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, enthusiasm for the team’s spirit of innovation and mission of improving reliability in cutting-edge technology
