As a Geotechnical Staff Professional, you will perform both field and technical assignments under the coaching of mid-to-senior level geotechnical engineers.
You will have the opportunity to perform a variety of tasks which will assist you to further develop your knowledge and abilities in the Geotechnical field. Typical duties and responsibilities may include, but are not be limited to, analysis of work according to standard geotechnical procedures on simple projects or on parts of more complex projects; as well as performing and/or reviewing data for accuracy. As a Geotechnical Field Professional you will also assist with writing reports on routine projects, with senior review of Geotechnical Project Managers, PE’s and other senior professionals.
Job Responsibilities:
- Initially trains under higher-level engineers/geologists and project coordinators until able to perform engineering and materials testing tasks without assistance and supervision
- Prepares cost estimates and schedules subsurface investigations
- Serves as onsite project representative, interacting with clients and team members to complete assigned projects on time and within budget
- Develops, manages, and performs field work for geotechnical and geological studies in accordance with company policies and procedures
- Manages/directs drilling and sampling activities including logging boring holes
- Adheres to established safety procedures
- Assigns and tracks progress of lab testing
- Inputs field and lab data into computer programs
- Performs critical review of laboratory test results in preparation for design recommendations
- Analyzes geotechnical findings, performs appropriate design calculations, and prepares draft reports under the direction of a Senior Engineer/Geologist
- Assists in the preparation and modification of reports by others
- Promptly notifies supervisor, project manager(s) of problems or changes that arise on projects
- Answers calls from supervisor, project manager(s) as soon as can reasonably be expected and, if unable to answer immediately, returns calls at first opportunity
- Once trained and operating independently, completes tasks and submits completed paperwork within appropriate time frame
- Performs other tasks as necessary. This includes being versatile and support not only the geotechnical investigation side of operations but will obtain a certain amount of proficiency in commercial material testing to provide support as necessary
Required Qualifications:
- B.S. in Civil Engineering/Geology or related field, M.S. in geotechnical engineering a plus
- E.I.T./G.I.T. registration or ability to obtain; P.E./R.G. a plus
- Familiarity with the principles of soil mechanics, foundation design, and slope stability
- Should possess a working knowledge of computer-based operating systems (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access), CAD and the ability to learn other engineering-related programs such as GINT, Geo-Slope, Rock Pac III, CRSP
Additional Requirements:
- Current driver’s license without restrictions (Acceptable 39-month driving record)
- Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions and apply mathematical concepts to practical situations
- Must be fluent in English
- Written – Handwriting must be legible; must be able to compose correspondence and prepare detailed reports of work activities completely and accurately
- Must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from co-workers and clients
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments
- Field work on outside construction sites involving long-term standing, sitting and repetitive motions
- Typically, at least 50% field work and 50% office work, depending on the week/work
- Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus), smell, hear and touch (use your hands to reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit)
- Some weekend and overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required. You may be required to drive hundreds of miles per day
