About the Opportunity
Editorial Coordinator | $60k
David Zwirner Books is seeking a candidate with a demonstrated interest in publishing to assist the editorial team of our imprint in New York. The ideal candidate has a BA in Art History or English and is highly organized, detail-oriented, and has proven capabilities in proofreading and project management. Candidates are interested in all editorial aspects of making a publication and are able to take on small publication projects independently. Previous experience at a museum, gallery, or arts publisher is a plus.
What you’ll do
- Project Management
- Project manage 2–4 titles a year, with the opportunity for growth
- Build out and maintain editorial and production schedules for all projects in Notion, in collaboration with DZB editorial and production team members
- Manage larger DZB team Notion boards
- Oversee yearly reprints in close collaboration with the Editor and Senior Editor
- Editorial Support
- Conduct image research, acquire high-res image files, and clear photography and artwork reproduction rights for all DZB projects
- Research, confirm, and format photography credits for all books
- Clear copyright for reprinted or revised texts not commissioned by DZB
- Organize translation of texts and translation checks
- Liaise with sales assistants to confirm collection lines for all publications; update collection lines in DZ database
- Prepare and edit image and artwork captions, readying them for typesetting
- Prepare and edit additional backmatter (list of works, acknowledgments, colophon)
- Create and distribute checklists to DZB production team, photo team, and others as needed
- Liaise with DZB production to release hi-res image files to printer/separator
- Organize materials for outside designers, including lo-res image sets, sample texts, and DZB design guidelines
- Communicate layout corrections to designers and slug revised pages in close collaboration with Senior Editor and Editor
- Possibility for copyediting and proofreading select texts
- Review bluelines on select projects in collaboration with Senior Editor and Editor
- Organize proposals sent to DZB for quarterly editorial planning meetings; schedule editorial planning meetings
- Maintain DZB Style Guide, in collaboration with Senior Editor and Editor
- Organize materials for DZB presentations (printing layouts or organizing outsourced printing)
- Maintain library of DZB publications
- Assist DZB distribution team with preparation of marketing copy for seasonal sales catalogues
- Maintain list of catalogue contributors for each project (e.g., image providers, writers, freelancers, and collectors); update addresses for catalogue mailings in collaboration with DZB distribution team
- Schedule studio visits with designers; maintain list of potential designers for future projects
- Editorial Intern Management
- Hire and manage editorial interns, in consultation with Senior Editor and Editor
- Oversee intern tasks, including fact-checking texts for DZB publications; transcribing texts and audio files of interviews; researching writers and collecting writing samples; maintaining list of active writers in the field, especially those who have written on DZ artists
What we would like you to have
- BA (Art History, English, Studio Arts preferred)
- 2–3 years experience in a museum, gallery, or art publisher
- Must have strong administrative, organizational, and professional communication skills
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Must be a detail-oriented and proactive team player with an ability to work independently
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style, Merriam-Webster 11th ed.
- Completion of a proofreading course is a plus
- Familiarity with Notion and Google Suite is a plus
- Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop is a plus
