Who We Are:
Calico (Calico Life Sciences LLC) is an Alphabet-founded research and development company whose mission is to harness advanced technologies and model systems to increase our understanding of the biology that controls human aging. Calico will use that knowledge to devise interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives. Calico’s highly innovative technology labs, its commitment to curiosity-driven discovery science, and, with academic and industry partners, its vibrant drug-development pipeline, together create an inspiring and exciting place to catalyze and enable medical breakthroughs.
Position Description:
The Calico Microscopy team seeks a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Fellow to lead an exciting and ground-breaking project exploring a novel approach to magnetogenetics, based on our lab’s previous observations. The successful candidate will possess a keen interest in technology development and invention as well as a desire to perform highly interdisciplinary research, encompassing a combination of fluorescence microscopy, molecular biology, biochemistry, in vivo imaging, physics and hardware development.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development of a magnetogenetic tool, which will likely require creating libraries and implementing screens for enhanced protein conformational changes triggered by magnetic fields, as well as demonstrating magnetic field control of a biological process in cells using magnets
- Collaborate with other researchers in the lab to develop and apply the new tools, beginning in cell culture and, with success, extending to mice
- Communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of subject matter experts spanning microscopy, biology, and protein engineering
- Communicate research findings and present the results at conferences and seminars
Position Requirements:
- PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, or a related field
- Strong lab experience, including fluorescence microscopy, biochemistry, protein engineering and molecular biology techniques
- Experience with development of bespoke fluorescence microscopy assays
- Familiarity with physics concepts like electromagnetism
- Affinity for modifying or building custom software and hardware.
- Proficiency with a programming language
- Experience with experiments in mice, or a strong desire to learn
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Capacity to work independently, manage projects effectively, and collaborate seamlessly within a multidisciplinary team
The estimated base salary for this role is $95,000.
