DescriptionThe Department of Transportation, in collaboration with the Federal Highway Administration, is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Graduate Research Assistant to support research initiatives focused on advancing transportation systems through data-driven methodologies. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic environment that integrates cutting-edge technology with practical applications in transportation.Responsibilities:- Data Collection and Management: Utilize programming languages such as Python, R, and SQL to collect, sort, compile, analyze, and manage extensive and diverse transportation data.- Database Management: Engage in data wrangling and manage databases using MySQL, Oracle, Databricks, and other relevant technologies to ensure the integrity and accessibility of data.- Data Visualization: Create compelling data visualizations using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, and Esri ArcGIS to effectively communicate research findings and insights to stakeholders.- Web/Data Scraping: Perform web and data scraping using APIs to gather relevant data from various sources, ensuring comprehensive datasets for analysis.- Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Utilize GIS for special data manipulation tasks, contributing to spatial analysis and mapping projects that support transportation research.- Machine Learning and AI: Apply machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and deep learning (DL) techniques to analyze transportation data, develop predictive models, and enhance decision-making processes.- Collaboration and Problem-Solving: Work collaboratively with faculty, researchers, and other stakeholders to identify research questions, formulate hypotheses, and develop innovative solutions to complex transportation issues.Requirements- Education: A minimum of a Master’s degree or in-process Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.- Technical Skills:- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and R, with experience in SQL for data management.- Hands-on experience with data wrangling and database management using MySQL, Oracle, and Databricks.- Strong data visualization skills with tools like Power BI, Tableau, and Esri ArcGIS.- Expertise in web and data scraping using APIs.- Familiarity with GIS and its application in transportation research.- Experience with machine learning, AI, and deep learning methodologies.- Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail.- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to a diverse audience.Preferred Qualifications:- Experience working on transportation-related research projects.- Familiarity with regulatory and policy frameworks related to the Department of Transportation.- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
