POSITION SUMMARY The Scientific Computing Core (SCC) manages supercomputing resources and provides high performance computing (HPC) expertise to all centers at the Flatiron Institute, a division of the Simons Foundation, developing tools broadly useful to the scientific community as a whole.Benchmarking is an important part of SCC’s activities, as it not only helps in choosing new hardware and software, but also in assisting scientific users when they run on the local compute resources. It is also a good way to detect performance issues when nodes and software go into production, as well as comparing different generations of hardware. Currently these comparisons are done manually over time with the results located in different spreadsheets. SCC is seeking an intern who will contribute to creating a database of the benchmark results and a web interface that will be used to query it and display the results. The internship will take place in-person at the Simons Foundation’s offices in New York City from May 27, 2025 – August 8, 2025. Applicable travel assistance to New York City and a supported temporary housing option while in New York City may be available.Visit Summer at Simons to learn more.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIESCreate the database and its API to add/update/query entriesCreate a web interface to access itPerform any other duties or tasks as assigned or requiredMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducationCurrently enrolled B.S. or M.S. in computer science, engineering or related technical discipline.ExperienceExperience with Unix (Linux or equivalent)Experience with scripting languages like PythonDatabases: NoSQLWeb development experienceRelated Skills & Other RequirementsMust enjoy working in a vigorous research-driven environmentDesire to document code and process, deliberative decision-making.Strong oral and written communicationExcellent collaborative and interpersonal skillsREQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALSResume or CVCover letter indicating your interest in the positionApplication DeadlineApplications for summer 2025 must be submitted by February 7, 2025COMPENSATIONThis internship pays $20 to $25 per hour, depending on degree level.THE SIMONS FOUNDATION’S DIVERSITY COMMITMENTMany of the greatest ideas and discoveries come from a diverse mix of minds, backgrounds and experiences, and we are committed to cultivating an inclusive work environment.
